Berkeley Speaks is a new online news outlet focused on issues of social justice in our city. We will provide news and analysis of issues such as housing and homelessness, public and mental/behavioral health, and policing, among others.

There is no newspaper in the Berkeley area that serves this purpose. We need your energy to make this newspaper a success.

More than anything else, we need people to write. Berkeley needs investigative journalism so that people can understand the five W’s of our civic life:

WHAT works, and what does not work, in city government?
WHEN will promises be kept, such as the Reimagining of public safety?
WHO is helping the unhoused find permanent housing, and who is blocking affordable housing?
WHERE can we find reliable information about racial and gender disparities in basic human needs?
WHY is it so difficult to root out police misconduct?

We are, additionally, in need of people who can photograph, web-design, illustrate, publicize, use social media, and write grants.
